It is a well-known fact that when the US military throws its weight behind an idea something interesting often happens. Take the internet for example, initially it served as a backbone for the interconnection of military networks in the 1980’s, but fast forward to today and it is now an integral part of life and international digital communication. The next big step in the evolution of the internet could also be thanks to the US Air Force, as researchers at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), and the National Science Foundation, have managed to turn air into an “optical fibre.” Yes you read that correctly, science fiction could become science fact very soon and literally change the way that the internet operates.
