Cell C Launches C-Fibre

Cell C Launches C-Fibre

The fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) business just got a whole lot more interesting with Cell C launching its very own fibre to the home service dubbed C-Fibre. Cell C, which is well established in the country, is South Africa’s third largest mobile network and it is estimated that it has over 22 million subscribers. This would allow them to directly approach and advertise to a large portion of the internet using public through their very own mobile network. But who exactly is assisting Cell C with this and will it be available in areas outside of Johannesburg (where it is rumoured to be launching first)?

So who is behind the C-Fibre initiative?

Cell C has partnered with an independent fibre network provider called Vumatel in Johannesburg, and they are responsible for much of the fibre broadband rollout in areas such as Hurlingham, Glenadrienne, Hyde Park, Northcliff, Sharonlea and Olivedale.

Will C-Fibre come to Cape Town?

Nothing has yet been confirmed, but Cell C has said in an official statement that it is also in discussions with other fibre providers across the country. Watch this blog for more information and C-Fibre updates.

What does Cell C have to say about FTTH?

Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos has already voiced his opinion on the project and stated that “In a world where content and technology are converging, customers are going to need high-speed and unrestricted access that will allow them to keep pace with their content consumption…” He further went on to add that “We are focused on providing the best possible experience to our customers and will be developing our broadband strategy to ensure that customers receive the quality and value they have come to expect from Cell C.”

Who else offers FTTH?

Cell C has now officially joined MTN and Telkom in offering fibre broadband services, along with a number of other independent players.
